Overview

The leg split feature allows you to divide a single leg into two separate legs, each with its own route, division, and revenue allocation. This is useful when you need to reassign portions of a load to different drivers, divisions, or when operational requirements change mid-route.

Quick Answer: You can split a leg from either the Dispatch Board or the Orders page by selecting a split point between stops, assigning divisions to each leg, and choosing how to allocate revenue between them.

What is Leg Splitting?

Leg splitting creates two separate legs from one original leg by dividing the stops. This operation:

  • Creates a new leg (Leg #2) from the selected stops

  • Keeps remaining stops in the original leg (Leg #1)

  • Allows different division assignments for each leg

  • Enables custom revenue allocation between legs

  • Maintains all stop details, sequencing, and order information

Common Use Cases:

  • Driver needs to be changed partway through a route

  • Load needs to be split between different divisions

  • Operational changes require separate tracking of route segments

  • Revenue needs to be allocated differently across divisions

Where to Split a Leg

You can split legs from two locations in the system:

⚠️ Can only split leg that has 3 or more stops

1. Dispatch Board

  • Navigate to the Dispatch Board

  • Select your driver manager and driver

  • View the driver's jobs

  • Click the Split leg button on the leg you want to split

2. Orders Page

  • Open the order in the Orders list

  • Navigate to the Route tab

  • Expand the leg you want to split

  • Click the Split leg button

Both methods open the same split leg dialog and follow the same three-step process.

How to Split a Leg

The leg split process has three steps:

Step 1: Select Split Point

  1. View the leg stops: All stops for the leg are displayed in sequence

  2. Drag the divider: A blue divider appears between stops. Drag it to position where you want to split the leg

  3. Choose your split point:

    1. Stops above the divider remain in Leg #1

    2. Stops below the divider move to the new Leg #2

  4. Click Next to continue

Important Notes:

  • At least one stop must remain in each leg

  • You cannot split at a stop that would leave no stops in either leg

  • Completed stops are included in the split preview

Step 2: Assign Divisions and Trailer

Assign Divisions

You can assign or change divisions for both legs:

  • Leg #1 Division: Select a division for the original leg (or keep existing)

  • Leg #2 Division: Select a division for the new leg

The system allows you to:

  • Keep both legs in the same division

  • Assign different divisions to each leg

  • Change the original leg's division if needed

Assign Trailer (Optional)

Toggle Assign trailer if you need to assign a trailer to the new leg.

When enabled: The trailer will be assigned to the first stop of the new leg (Leg #2). When to use this:

  • The new leg requires a different trailer than the original

  • A trailer needs to be picked up at the split point

  • Trailer assignment changes between leg segments

Click Next to proceed to revenue splitting.

Step 3: Split Revenue

This final step allows you to allocate the order's revenue between the two legs.

Revenue Display

The screen shows:

  • Total order revenue: The complete revenue amount from the order

  • Leg #1 details: Mileage and allocated revenue

  • Leg #2 details: Mileage and allocated revenue

  • Remaining revenue: Amount not yet allocated

Split Options

Split Equally

  • Click the Split equally button

  • Revenue is automatically divided equally between all unlocked legs

  • If any leg has locked revenue, only the remaining revenue is split equally among unlocked legs

Custom Split

  • Click the Custom split button

  • All unlocked leg revenue fields are set to $0.00

  • Manually enter the revenue amount for each unlocked leg

  • The system displays the remaining unallocated revenue

Revenue Allocation

For each leg, you can:

  • Enter revenue amount: Type the dollar amount in the revenue field

  • View percentage: See what percentage of total revenue each leg represents

  • Lock revenue: Click the lock icon to prevent automatic recalculation

Important: You cannot split revenue if you don't have the adjust revenue permission.

Lock Revenue Functionality

What is Revenue Locking?

Revenue locking allows you to fix a leg's revenue amount so it won't change when:

  • Other legs are adjusted

  • The order revenue changes

  • Stops are added or removed

  • The leg is modified

When you lock a leg's revenue:

  • That specific revenue amount is permanently assigned to that leg

  • Other unlocked legs will adjust to accommodate the locked amount

  • The locked amount won't be recalculated by the system

How to Lock/Unlock Revenue

To Lock Revenue:

  1. Enter the desired revenue amount for a leg

  2. Click the lock icon next to the revenue field

  3. The lock icon becomes filled, indicating the revenue is locked

To Unlock Revenue:

  1. Click the filled lock icon next to a locked leg

  2. The revenue becomes unlocked and can be recalculated

  3. The lock icon returns to its unlocked state

Lock Revenue Rules

At least one leg must remain unlocked:

  • You cannot lock all legs

  • The last unlocked leg's lock button will be disabled

  • This ensures the system can automatically adjust for order revenue changes

Locked revenue in equal split:

  • When you click "Split equally" with locked legs:

  • Locked leg revenue stays fixed

  • Only the remaining revenue (total minus locked amounts) is split equally among unlocked legs

Example:

Order revenue is $1,000.00. You have 2 legs.

  • Lock Leg #1 at $300.00

  • Click "Split equally"

  • Result: Leg #1 = $300.00 (locked), Leg #2 = $700.00 (auto-calculated)

When to Lock Revenue

Lock revenue when:

  • A specific payment amount has been agreed upon for a leg

  • You need to guarantee a division receives a certain revenue amount

  • Revenue should not change regardless of order modifications

  • You're splitting between owner-operators with fixed rate agreements

  • Regulatory or contractual requirements specify leg-specific revenue

Validation and Warnings

Revenue Validation:

  • Total allocated revenue cannot exceed order revenue

  • Each leg must have a non-negative revenue amount

  • The system displays remaining unallocated revenue in real-time

If you try to over-allocate:

  • The system prevents saving with an error message

  • Adjust leg amounts or unlock and use "Split equally"

Info Message:

"You can lock the revenue for individual legs to ensure the allocated revenue amount will not change under any circumstances. At least one leg has to remain unlocked."

Completing the Split

Once you've configured divisions and revenue:

  1. Review your settings:

    1. Check that stops are split correctly

    2. Verify division assignments

    3. Confirm revenue allocation totals correctly

  2. Click "Apply split":

    1. The system creates the new leg

    2. Revenue is allocated as specified

    3. Both legs appear in the order with their respective stops

  3. Confirmation:

    1. You'll see a success message: "Leg split successfully"

    2. The page refreshes to show both legs

    3. Each leg can now be dispatched and tracked independently

After Splitting

What Happens to Each Leg

Leg #1 (Original):

  • Contains the stops that remained above the split divider

  • Keeps the original driver assignment (if dispatched)

  • Updates with the new revenue allocation

  • Maintains any completed stop statuses

Leg #2 (New):

  • Contains the stops that were below the split divider

  • Starts with "Pending" status

  • Has the revenue allocation you specified

  • Can be dispatched to a new driver

  • Includes the trailer assignment if you specified one

Managing Split Legs

After splitting, you can:

Dispatch separately:

  • Assign each leg to different drivers

  • Dispatch at different times

  • Track completion independently

Adjust revenue again:

  • Navigate to the order's Billing tab

  • Click Adjust FinanceAdjust split

  • Modify revenue allocation between legs

  • Lock or unlock revenue as needed

Track independently:

  • Each leg appears separately in dispatch

  • Stop statuses update independently

  • Driver pay calculates per leg

Complete independently:

  • Legs can be completed at different times

  • Settlement processes separately per leg

  • Each leg generates its own driver pay

Important Considerations

Before Splitting

⚠️ Check completed stops:

  • If only completed stops remain in Leg #1, the system will automatically mark that leg as completed

  • You'll receive a warning before this happens: "After splitting the leg, the initial leg will be set as completed since only the completed stops will remain. Are you sure you want to proceed?"

⚠️ Revenue allocation:

  • Plan how revenue should be distributed

  • Consider if divisions have specific revenue requirements

  • Decide which legs need locked revenue

After Splitting

Cannot be undone:

  • Leg splits are permanent

  • You cannot merge legs back together

  • Plan carefully before applying the split

Revenue adjustments:

  • You can always adjust revenue split later from the Billing tab

  • Locked revenue remains locked unless you manually unlock it

  • Unlocked revenue recalculates when order revenue changes

Driver pay impacts:

  • Each leg calculates driver pay separately

  • Mileage is calculated per leg for pay purposes

  • Settlements process per leg

Adjusting Revenue Split Later

If you need to modify revenue allocation after splitting:

From the Orders Page

  1. Open the order in the Orders list

  2. Navigate to the Billing tab

  3. Click "Adjust Finance" button

  4. Select "Adjust split"

  5. Modify revenue amounts:

    1. Use "Split equally" or "Custom split"

    2. Lock or unlock revenue as needed

    3. Adjust individual leg amounts

  6. Click "Save" to apply changes

This allows you to:

  • Change revenue distribution without re-splitting

  • Lock or unlock revenue for any leg

  • Respond to billing changes or corrections

  • Adjust for order revenue updates
