Overview
Truck location tracking helps you monitor your fleet in real-time, ensuring timely deliveries and enabling proactive dispatch decisions. The TMS provides multiple ways to view truck locations depending on your workflow needs.
Quick Answer: You can view truck locations in three places: the Assets > Trucks page for detailed truck profiles, the Plan & Dispatch > Dispatch board for driver-focused views, and the Plan & Dispatch > Available Units list for fleet-wide availability.
Finding Truck Location in the Assets Page
The Assets page provides the most detailed view of individual truck locations, including GPS tracking history and manual location updates.
How to Access
Step 1: Navigate to Trucks
Click Assets in the main navigation menu
Select Trucks from the submenu
You'll see a list of all trucks in your fleet
Step 2: Select a Truck
Find the truck you want to view
Click on the truck row to lead to truck profile
The truck profile displays multiple information cards
Step 3: View Location Information
The location card displays:
Current location (city and state)
Interactive map showing GPS coordinates
Last location update timestamp
Update source (either "by GPS" for automatic updates or "updated manually")
What the Location Shows
The location information indicates where the truck was last seen or reported:
GPS-enabled trucks: Location updates automatically from the truck's GPS device (typically via Samsara integration)
Non-GPS trucks: Location must be updated manually by dispatchers
Timestamp: Shows when the location was last updated to help you assess data freshness
π‘ Tip: If a truck has a GPS device connected (Samsara integration), you cannot manually edit the location - it updates automatically from the GPS feed.
Finding Truck Location in the Dispatch Board
The Dispatch board provides quick access to truck locations while you're actively managing driver assignments and loads.
How to Access
Step 1: Navigate to Dispatch
Click Planning in the main navigation menu
Select Dispatch from the submenu
You'll see a list of drivers
Step 2: Select a Driver
Find the driver whose truck location you want to view
Click on the driver's row to open their detail view
The driver detail screen shows multiple tabs and action buttons
Step 3: View Truck Location
See Last GPS location
Additional Truck Information in Dispatch
While viewing a driver in the dispatch board, you can also:
Click the truck icon button to open the full truck profile (same as viewing from Assets)
View driver information alongside truck details
See active jobs and upcoming assignments
Viewing Available Units for Fleet-Wide Tracking
The Available Units screen provides a comprehensive list of all trucks that are available or will be available soon, including their current locations.
How to Access
Step 1: Navigate to Available Units
Click Planning -> Planning in the main navigation menu
Scroll to Available Units list
The Location column in Available Units shows:
City and state of the truck's last known position
Last update indicator showing how recently the location was updated (e.g., "5 min ago", "2 hours ago")
"N/A" if location data is unavailable
π‘ Tip: The location timestamp helps you identify which trucks have fresh GPS data versus stale location information. This is crucial when planning time-sensitive pickups.
Understanding GPS Location Updates
How GPS Location Works
For trucks with GPS devices (Samsara integration):
Location updates automatically from the GPS device
Updates typically occur every 10 minutes while the truck is moving
Location cannot be manually edited for GPS-enabled trucks
Shows "by GPS" in the timestamp to indicate automatic updates
Manual Location Updates
For trucks without GPS devices:
Location must be updated manually by dispatchers
Go to Assets > Trucks (or open truck profile from dispatch board), select the truck, and click edit on the "Last known location" card
Shows "updated manually" in the timestamp
Useful for tracking trucks that don't have GPS hardware installed yet
Troubleshooting Location Issues
Problem: Location shows "unavailable" or "N/A"
Cause: Truck has no GPS device, or GPS hasn't reported yet
Solution: For GPS trucks, check GPS device connectivity; for non-GPS trucks, manually update the location
Problem: Location timestamp is old (hours or days old)
Cause: GPS device may be offline, or truck may be parked without power
Solution: Contact the driver to verify their current location, check GPS device status, or manually update if needed
Problem: Location is inaccurate
Cause: GPS signal issues, device calibration problems
Solution: For GPS trucks, the system will automatically correct on next update; for manual updates, enter the correct location
